Scenes From A Sketchbook
Jazz Compositions in various Styles
(AMA-Verlag)

About the book:

Many saxophonists who have advanced beyond the beginning stages have trouble finding suitable and interesting Jazz compositions to play. Jazz standards and pop tunes are nice, but they are often too short and not especially challenging. On the other hand, the available solo transcription of famous musicians are frequently too difficult. Beyond these two options there is not much else available. This volume has been created to fill this gap in the market for all those intermediate saxophonists interested in Jazz.

“Scenes From A Sketchbook” is a collection of Jazz concert pieces and tunes in which every work is a portrait of a Jazz style, a Jazz composer or a Jazz musician. The first selection of every piece is a theme. An “improvised” variation over the chord progression of the melody follows in the second part. The compositions are both captivating and varied and lend themslves well to live performance.

Reviews:

“The attractive and charming compositions are highly suitable to help the learning saxophone player and to give him a feeling for the different jazz styles. A book, that saxophonists should go for, and that could be useful also for other instrumentalists.”
(“Jazzpodium”)

“This is a wunderful collection of nine grandiose compositions, that pay homage to different jazz greats. Each piece is played first in a demo-version, then as a play-along. The rhythm-section is excellent and Matthias Petzold plays with a full tenor sound and exact phrasing. Highly recommended for all commencing jazz musicians.”
(“Solo”)
